FIJI VISITOR: This weekend we have Father Mikaele PAUNGA, a Tongan priest who teaches at the Pacific Regional Seminary in Suva, Fiji, who will speak about the Church in those countries. There will be NO special collection but the parish will give a donation to assist the recovery from the tsunami in Tonga.
CAN YOU HELP? Monsignor has been asked by Boys’ Town in Fiji, run by the Montfort Brothers, to see if parishioners have the following they may be able to donate to help their 130 pupils (aged 16 - 20 years) who are learning a trade.
Please bring these to the Presbytery (ON THIS OCCASSION ONLY in plastic bags) so we can count them and re-pack them.
130 single bed sheets
40 towels
130 ‘T’ shirts
130 3/4 shorts or
3/4 cargo pants
Football socks
Toothpaste & toothbrushes
Washing soap for clothes
Large (industrial) pots & pans for cooking
Cutlery (please wrap)

Anointing of the Sick:
At all Masses next week-end, the sick and frail of the parish will have the opportunity to be anointed and to receive the Sanctifying Grace of this Sacrament.
This week the Pope celebrates Mass for the Sick of the world.

|
|
PROJECT COMPASSION:
Envelopes are being distributed this weekend in preparation for Lent which begins on Ash Wednesday - 17 February. This is the Lenten collection for Project Compassion, administered by Caritas Australia. Donations are tax deductible. Last year's total was $28,629-80.

The Hearing Impaired: Some time ago, (October 2007) I asked for anyone who may be interested or who would benefit from us installing THE LOOP in the Church, to contact me. At the time, no-one approached me. However, I again ask that should anyone believe they would benefit from the Parish installing such a system, to please contact me. The original plan was for half of the Church to be fitted with this system which allows those with hearing aids to really benefit from it. If there is some interest we would be prepared to assist those people to allow them to attend Mass easier.

HELPING THE POOR OF REDFERN: Today, Tony Day, one of our parishioners will speak to you for 1 minutes asking your help for the poor of Redfern. The plan will be that this week, that those who can, collect a food container (provided) after Mass and during the coming week make a casserole/stew. The frozen food can be returned NEXT WEEK-END ONLY before each Mass at the main doors of the Church. A recipe is available with the containers. Thank you.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST: Parishioners who are interested in the Extra-ordinary Ministries of Holy Communion - Acolyte (male) or Minister of Holy Communion (male & female) are invited to speak with Monsignor Rayner as soon as possible.
REQUIREMENTS: Must be baptised & confirmed and over 18 and prepared to assist with ministering on the Altar (Roster basis) as well as be able to assist with taking the Blessed Sacrament to our fellow house-bound parishioners, Nursing Homes and Hospitals within Gymea Parish.

St Vincent de Paul Society congratulates Jim Gothard, Adrian Widenstrom, Sean & Michele McQuillan, Peter Cobcroft and Tony Day for completing the "Introduction to Disaster Recovery" Course. This is a pro-active initiative of the Society should a disaster occur locally or elsewhere. Great effort.
NEW SCHOOL HALL: This week we began the project to build a new school hall on the President Avenue site west of the Presbytery. This $3m project is part of the Federal Government's "Building the Education Revolution" (BER). The Hall will be on stilts with play and shade area underneath and includes a lift. The school children will use the grassed area along Gymea Bay Road, this side of High Street, which is leased from the RTA, to enjoy their lunch breaks and play.
PRESBYTERY ADDITIONS: Will begin in March so until August the area will certainly look like a work site.
|
|
|
PARKING IN SCHOOL GROUNDS: Parishioners are asked NOT to leave their cars in the car park after the Saturday Vigil and Sunday Evening Masses to do their shopping, buy their dinner or go out for dinner as the GATES will be locked immediately after these evening Masses.

LONELY/ALONE/LOST/NEEDY???????
Are you feeling alone or needing some care from your fellow parishioners? I am aware that some parishioners are feeling down as they do not know anyone in the parish. Some are lonely, some cannot get to Mass but would like to be on a Communion List, others have personal or family worries. Please arrange a chat with Brother Chharles, Sister Monika or me. There are various groups that may assist you or Church agencies that are professionally set up to provide counseling, care or assistance. Please feel free to approach the Priests of the parish. St Catherine’s should aim to a caring, Catholic community in action and not just word.
